Closing Ceremony of Mathematics Week and Celebration of International Mathematics Day

The closing ceremony of Mathematics Week and the celebration of International Mathematics Day took place on 10th March 2025 in Indu Hall, graced by the esteemed presence of Professor Dr. Bishnu Prashad Dhungana (Tribhuvan University) and Mr. Netra Prashad Sapkota. International Mathematics Day is observed annually on 14th March.
Mathematics Week, held from 3rd to 7th March 2025, featured a series of mathematical competitions across Junior, Middle, and Senior School (Grades I to XI). The winners of various competitions were honoured for their achievements. In the Junior School, winners of the Run and Solve competition (Grade I), Bingo Game (Grade II), Card Game (Grade III), and Find Me-Board Game (Grade IV) were awarded gold, silver, and bronze medals along with certificates of achievement by Chief Guest Dr. Dhungana, in the presence of Vice Principal Mr. Ramchandra Khanal and Head of Mathematics Department, Mr. R.K. Tripathi.
Similarly, in the Middle School category, winners of Model Making on Fractions (Grade V), Mathematical Data Presentation (Grade VI), Intersection Mathematics Speech Competition (Grade VII), and Biography Presentation Competition (Grade VIII) received medals and merit certificates.
In the Senior School category, winners of the Intersection Mathematics Poetry Recitation Competition (Grade IX) and the Intersection Skit Competition (Grade XI) were also recognized with medals and certificates. A total of 67 students were honoured for their dedication and excellence in Mathematics.
Addressing the gathering, Prof. Dr. Dhungana expressed his joy in witnessing young mathematical talents being celebrated. He emphasized the significance of Mathematics in everyday life, describing it as "the queen of sciences, a language of precision, a tool for problem-solving, and a key to understanding the intricate patterns of the universe through numbers, shapes, and equations." He also paid tribute to renowned mathematicians and scientists, acknowledging their invaluable contributions to the world.
Vice Principal Mr. Ramchandra Khanal extended heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Dhungana for his inspiring words and highlighted his distinction as one of the youngest scholars to earn a PhD in Nepal. He also shared that Dr. Dhungana holds a special connection with DAV as the father of Mr. Ashok Dhungana, a Head Boy of the Academic Session 2012/13. Mr. Khanal expressed hope for future collaborations with Dr. Dhungana.
The event was attended by Senior School Coordinator Mr. Tank Meghji Devji, along with activity in-charges from various school wings, who provided their support throughout the programme.
The ceremony began with a welcome speech by Mathematics HOD Mr. Tripathi, who outlined the objectives of Mathematics Week and International Mathematics Day at DAV. The formal proceedings commenced with the traditional lighting of the Lamp of Wisdom and the singing of the National Anthem. The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Senior School Mathematics Teacher Mr. C.B. Basnet. The MC for the programme was Middle School Mathematics Teacher Mr. Shyam Lal Das.
As part of the cultural segment, a group of Grade VII students performed a classical dance, while winners of the Mathematics Poetry Recitation Competition (Grade IX) presented their winning pieces. Additionally, the first-place winners of the Mathematics Model Making Competition showcased their projects, and the Grade XI winning team performed their award-winning skit.
