Date: Jul 15th, 2025
To commemorate the 212th Bhanu Jayanti, the Nepali Department and the Devkota Nepali Club of the Senior School at DAV organised a Nepali Verse Poetry Recitation Competition for students of Grades IX and X. The event took place in Jetavan Hall on 14th July, in the gracious presence of Vice-principal Mr. Ramchandra Khanal and Head of the Nepali Department Mr. Narayan Khatiwada. The competition was evaluated by Mr. Dambar Bikel and Ms Bipana Karki.
Upagya Dahal of Grade X ‘D’ served as the moderator of the event. A total of 24 students took part in the competition, reciting verses by renowned Nepali poets. The audience comprised students from Grade IX ‘D’ and Grade X ‘B’, who attentively appreciated the performances.
In his address to the students, Vice-principal Mr. Ramchandra Khanal spoke on the multifaceted nature of Nepali verse poetry. He acknowledged the strengths of the participants and offered constructive feedback for improvement. Emphasising the cognitive benefits of memorising poetry, he noted that such practice helps develop a rich vocabulary and keeps the brain active—an essential foundation for intellectual growth. He also cited several successful personalities known for their linguistic command, underlining that mastery of one language paves the way for learning others with greater ease.
Vice-principal encouraged students to make use of both their teachers’ guidance and digital resources, such as YouTube, to further refine their poetic skills. He also described literature as a form of therapy, highlighting its role in helping individuals understand and cope with life’s different circumstances. “When students study literature, they learn how people navigate different challenges in life,” he remarked.
Adding to the discussion, Nepali HOD Mr. Narayan Khatiwada recited several poems presented during the competition and explained that each form of verse poetry follows its own specific structure or formula. He stressed the importance of adhering to these poetic conventions, cautioning students against altering the established forms.
The results were announced immediately following the programme. From Grade IX, Bipashana Khadka of IX ‘F’ secured the first position, followed by Suryanshu Jha of IX ‘B’ in second place and Sayusha Maskey of IX ‘E’ in third. Kartik Joshi and Sarwani Subedi, both from IX ‘B’, received consolation prizes.
From Grade X, Subagya Baniya of X ‘E’ claimed the first position, while Sameera Khanal of X ‘G’, Ojashwini Karki of X ‘E’, and Snigdha Adhikari were awarded second, third, and fourth positions, respectively. All participants and winners were honoured with Certificates of Achievement at the conclusion of the event.
