Teachers’ Training on Mental Health Conditions

The Human Resources Department, under the guidance of the DAV School Management, organised a teachers’ training session on mental health conditions in Pratik Hall on August 23. Dr. Simmi Gurubacharya, a renowned pediatric served as the resource person for the session.
Mr. Ramchandra Khanal warmly welcomed Dr. Gurubacharya in the presence of HR Manager Mr. Ashish Rai.
The training began with a brief mindfulness practice, followed by interactive discussions on mental health, the importance of mental well-being, mental health conditions, the hidden mental health crisis in Nepal, adolescent health, the characteristics of teenage and adult brains, factors affecting mental health, and strategies for mental health promotion and prevention. The session was conducted under the theme, “A Healthy Mind is the Heart of a Happy Life.”
Drawing on national and global data and research from recognised institutions, Dr. Gurubacharya highlighted the growing mental health challenges affecting people across different age groups. She emphasised the important roles of families, schools, health professionals, communities and digital media in nurturing and supporting children and young people.
She also advocated for the introduction of empathy classes, similar to those practised in Denmark, which have shown positive outcomes in promoting mental well-being among teenagers. She further stressed the importance of incorporating emotional intelligence and interpersonal understanding into the school curriculum.
As a special focus, Dr. Gurubacharya explained how different parts of the brain develop at different stages of life. She highlighted the role of the frontal part of the brain in decision-making and explained that it continues to develop into early adulthood, reaching full maturity at around the age of 30.
The programme was moderated by Ms. Asha Khadka, Head of the English Department, who also delivered the vote of thanks. She expressed her hope for more such insightful sessions with Dr. Gurubacharya in the future.
