Unlocking Hidden Talent: Stand-Up Comedy in Middle School

Devkota Nepali Club organised an Inter-House Stand-Up Comedy Competition for Middle School students on the occasion of Gaijatra on August 26 in Indu Hall. The programme was graced by Mr. Ramchandra Khanal, Middle School Co-ordinator Mr. Krishna Joshi and Head of the Nepali Department Mr. Narayan Khatiwada.
A total of 24 students from Grades V to VIII participated in the competition, with six contestants representing each grade. The students presented humorous performances on various social, financial, political and contemporary issues. Some contestants also included creative caricatures in their acts, making the programme lively and entertaining.
The audience comprised students of Grade VII and SEE students. Mr. Surchen Shah, Middle School Activity In-charge, and Mr. Dambar Bikel, Nepali Language Teacher were the judges of the competition. The programme was moderated by Ananyaa Risal and Paridhi Malla Shahi of Grade VIII, along with Sugam Khanal of Grade IX ‘B’.
According to Club In-charge Ms. Sita Niroula, the main objective of the competition was to identify and encourage students’ hidden talents. The event helped students develop creativity, imagination, language skills, confidence and presentation skills while giving them an enjoyable platform to express themselves.
Speaking on the occasion, Nepali HOD Mr. Narayan Khatiwada highlighted that the Inter-House Stand-Up Comedy Competition is an annual cultural programme of the Devkota Nepali Club organised to celebrate Gaijatra. He explained the cultural importance of Gaijatra and shared how stand-up comedy can make learning enjoyable and help convey messages effectively. He appreciated the performances and offered constructive feedback to the contestants. He also encouraged students to continue exploring stand-up comedy as it helps develop confidence, logical thinking and language skills.
Following the programme, Middle School Co-ordinator Mr. Krishna Joshi, in the presence of the Nepali HOD, honoured the achievers with Certificates of Achievement.
The results were as follows:
Grade V: Ananya Gupta (5 ‘A’) secured first position, followed by Aarohi Bhushal (5 ‘D’) in second and Aashrav Sapkota (5 ‘F’) in third.
Grade VI: Iden Pun (6 ‘F’) won first position, Shraddha Dahal (6 ‘B’) secured second, and Samarpan Thapa (6 ‘E’) stood third.
Grade VII: Jagat Jung Adhikari (7 ‘B’) claimed first position, Sumit Khadka (7 ‘F’) secured second, and Sugam Adhikari (7 ‘C’) won third position.
Grade VIII: Shashwot Bikram Basnet (8 ‘D’) secured first position, Bihan Khatri (8 ‘D’) came second, and Nischal Thakur (8 ‘C’) secured third position.
