Ashtakundiya Vidya Subharambha Havan Marks the Beginning of the Academic Session 2025/26 at DAV School

Date: Apr 21st, 2025

‘Ashtakundiya Vidya Subharambha Havan’ was held at Indu Sadan and Shankar Sadan on 20th April 2025, marking the beginning of the academic session 2025/26 at DAV Sushil Kedia Vishwa Bharati School. For the past 32 years, the Havan tradition has been an important part of the school’s Vedic and Sanskrit-based education system.
Late Shankar Lal Kedia had a visionary belief in Anglo-Vedic education. He strongly felt that combining Vedic values with modern education would help prepare the younger generation to succeed in an increasingly globalised world influenced by Western models.
During the ceremony, Vice-Principal Mr. Ramchandra Khanal addressed students, parents, and teachers. He shared that each academic session at DAV begins with the Vidya Subharambha Havan. He also highlighted that DAV Sushil Kedia Vishwa Bharati School is a part of the wider DAV family, which includes over 900 schools and more than 75 universities and colleges worldwide. He emphasised that DAV School is a memorial school that follows the Dayananda Anglo-Vedic model, blending Vedic wisdom with modern learning.
Addressing on the auspicious occasion, the Chief Guest, Prof. Dr. Priyavada Kafle from Nepal Sanskrit University spoke on the importance of Havan, Sanskrit education, and the rich culture of Bharatbarsha. She explained how using ghee from native cows in Havan can purify the environment. She cited the Bhopal gas tragedy as an example, noting that a family performing Havan using local ghee in the area daubed by cow dung remained unaffected by the disaster.
Dr. Kafle also encouraged the practice of Sanskrit education alongside local cow farming, highlighting the many benefits cows offer to humanity. She gave examples of how students brought up in Sanskrit traditions have become role models in various professions. She advocated teaching Ramayan and Mahabharat shlokas from an early age through oral methods to help students later explore deeper Vedic texts like the Vedas and Upanishads. She firmly stated that Sanskrit is a world language, and mastering it can open doors to learning other languages.
Students from Grades VII to XII participated in the Havan at Indu Hall, while Kindergarten to Grade VI students joined in Pratik Hall. The Yajaman for the Havan at Indu Sadan was Vice-Principal Mr. Ramchandra Khanal, while Mr. Narayan Khatiwada, SEE In-charge for Classes IX and X, served as Yajaman in Pratik Hall.
The Sanskrit HOD, Mr. Purushottam Rijal, along with the Sanskrit faculty, performed the rituals following traditions from the Rigveda and Shukla Yajurveda, according to the Arya Samaj teachings of Maharshi Dayananda Saraswati. Students from the Natikaji Music Club and teachers from the Music Department, guided by Music HOD Mr. Jay Shreevastav, added a joyful musical touch with devotional hymns.
Throughout the ceremony, students, parents, and teachers took part in the sacred rituals under the guidance of the pundits. The influence of Maharshi Dayananda Saraswati’s promotion of the Havan culture continues to inspire and shape the spiritual and educational ethos of DAV schools across the globe.
