Mock Parliamentary Session of the House of Representatives

A team of 37 students from Grade VIII and IX conducted a Mock Parliamentary Session of the House of Representatives (Lower House) in Jetavan Hall on August 3.
The session began with the newly elected members taking the oath of office, administered by the Speaker of the House, Riwaj Pradhanang (Grade IX 'C'). After the oath-taking ceremony, Education Minister Samip Pokhrel (Grade IX 'C'), Health Minister Aarav Kayastha (Grade IX 'D'), and Home Minister Shaswot Chaudhary (Grade IX 'D') congratulated all the newly elected members and shared their views on the importance of the parliamentary system. Representing the major opposition party, Abhinay Paudel (Grade VIII 'B') spoke about the vital role of the opposition in a democracy and wished the House a successful term.
During the Special Time and Zero Hour, few parliament members discussed important topics such as the impact of Artificial Intelligence and the growing habit of eating junk food in School. The session then moved on to legislative business, where Prime Minister Nomim Subba (Grade IX 'E') presented a new Bill. The Speaker read the Bill before the House, and Opposition representative Rechak Chapagain (Grade VIII 'A') suggested amendments, expressing concern that some of its original provisions could negatively affect society.
The House then held a clause-by-clause discussion before voting on the Bill. As the majority of members voted in its favour, the Bill was passed by the House of Representatives and forwarded to the National Assembly (Upper House) for further approval. With this, the mock parliamentary session came to a successful conclusion.
The two-hour session was held in the presence of Middle School Co-ordinator Mr. Krishna Joshi and Head of the Social Studies Department Ms. Aarti Sharma. The moderators of the programme were Sadichhya Sharma (Grade X 'F') and Aaniya Sharma (Grade X 'D').
The programme was organised to provide students with practical knowledge of the parliamentary procedures they study in their Social Studies text books. According to Mother Teresa Social Service Club In-charge Ms. Sushma Lamshal, the activity successfully achieved its learning objectives through careful planning and preparation. The participating students were trained by the faculty members of Social Studies Ms. Kamana Adhikari, Ms. Renu BC, Mr. Shreedhar Subedi, and Ms. Sushma Lamshal.
All the students were honoured with Certificate of Achievement immediately after the programme in recognition of their hard work and outstanding efforts.
