Gaijatre Laughter Challenge Sparks Joy and Cultural Reflection

The Buddha Hall buzzed with excitement on August 21 as students gathered for the Inter House Gaijatre Laughter Challenge, an event organised to celebrate the vibrant Gaijatra Festival. The competition, jointly hosted by the Nepali Department and Devkota Nepali Club, brought together students from middle school (Grade V to VIII) for a day filled with humour, culture, and creativity. The Gaijatre Laughter Challenge was not just about fun and it was a deep dive into understanding traditional Nepali culture and festivals. The event aimed at providing a platform for the students to express their thoughts on contemporary social issues through humour and satire. Vice-Principal Mr. Ramchandra Khanal addressed the gathering, sharing the rich history of the Gaijatra Festival. He recount King Pratap Malla introduced the festival during his regime from 1641 A.D. to 1674 A.D. in Kantipur Estate as a way to bring laughter and light-heartedness to her queen in the times of grief. Vice-principal also emphasised the additional aspect of Gaijatra from the Panchayat era, noting its humorous and satirical elements. At the same time, he commended the students for their clear and confident presentations and encouraged them to explore other creative avenues, such as stand-up comedy, short dramas, and cultural performances, in future editions. The Head of the Nepali Department, Mr. Narayan Khatiwada, took the stage to announce the results, expressing his admiration for the hard work and dedication shown by both the students and their guiding teachers. The judges for the competition were Mr. Narayan Khatiwada and Ms. Goma Charmakar. As per the results, Mt. Machhapuchhre House emerged as the winner, scoring an impressive 85 points out of total 100. Mt. Gaurishankar House followed closely with 83 points, securing second place, while Mt. Kanchanjunga House took third place with 82 points. The audience were from Grade VII.
