Debate on the Pros and Cons of Social Networking Sites for Grade X Students

Nepali Department and Devkota Nepali Club of Senior School, organised an Inter-Section Nepali Debate Competition for Grade X students in Indu Hall on November 21.
The topic of the debate was "Social Media: Boon or Bane", with ten students participating. The debaters were Samipya Paudel (Section E), Satyam Karn (Section A), Deepshikha Subedi (Section B), Prabhav Joshi (Section D), Rubina Gajurel (Section D), Snigdha Adhikari (Section E), Sitanandan Sharma (Section C), Yukta Paudel (Section A), Dewashish Bhusal (Section B), and Samaira Khanal Ojha (Section C).
During the debate, some participants argued in favour of social media, emphasising its significance in modern life, while others highlighted its negative impact on users’ well-being.
Addressing the students, Mr. Narayan Khatiwada, Head of the Nepali Department, noted that this Grade X debate competition has been held for the past 20 years. He emphasised that knowledge is gained not only through reading but also through practical application. He described debate as a purely intellectual exercise, requiring participants to present well-researched arguments with appropriate references. Mr. Khatiwada also encouraged the use of proverbs and local idiomatic expressions in debates. He expressed satisfaction with the majority of the presentations and offered constructive suggestions to enhance a few performances.
The evaluation criteria included the inaugural address, presentation style, content, strength of arguments, language, and the closing remarks. The judges were Ms. Sita Niraula and Ms. Rofi Mali, Middle School Nepali language teachers.
As per the results, Dewashish Bhusal secured the first position, followed by Snigdha Adhikari in second, Sitanandan Sharma in third, and Samipya Paudel received the consolation position. The moderators of the programme were Upagya Dahal and Prajita Paudel from Grade X. The audience comprised Grade X students.
Following the competition, the winners were honoured with Certificates of Achievement.
